I come to most technology somewhat later than other people, so if you've been hearing about Ceiva for years, I'm sorry to bore you. But when I did a Google News search on the term, the only item I got back was a June 29 press release on Yahoo Business, where Ceiva.com is listed as no. 19 on BLAKEandDIANA.com's list of favorite websites for real estate support and life management.
But there it is, in the SBC Entertainment and Communication glossy brochure I received in the mail at the weekend: "Receive new photos every day, without a PC" "The SBC Digital Photo Receiver plugs into an ordinary phone line and dials a local number each night to puck up new photos sent to the Receiver."
The brochure shows the two interchangeable frames the gizmo has, in Silverstone Grey and Elegant Black, and while they may not match in scale those huge digital displays I recall Bill Gates was having put on the wall of his mansion so he could have an ever-changing array of artwork, they do display "up to 30 new pictures daily in a digital picture slide show" on a "vivid 5" by 7" LCD screen."
"With permission, anyone with Internet access or a camera phone can send photos to the SBC Digital Photo Receiver for free," states the brochure.
I'm not quite sure how it figures in to the direction this January, 2005 , press release seemed to indicate SBC was going in, but it's an interesting development. There is something really compelling about the idea that I might get up in the morning to see a slideshow of pictures from my faraway friends playing on my DPR, having been downloaded overnight.
PS, I don't work for SBC, nor mean to endorse the product--I just want to hear what other people think about it!
PPS, Oops, now I've found a review at Semper:Aptus : "All said, and even counting our hesitations, the Ceiva picture frame is our choice for the "killer app" of Internet appliance connectivity for the first half of the year 2000."
Hey, so I'm five years behind the times as usual!
